Astatine is the last of the known halogens and was synthesized in 1940 by Corson and others at the University of California. It is radioactive and its name, from the Greek astatos, means "unstable". The element can be produced by bombarding targets made of bismuth-209 with high energy alpha particles (helium nuclei).

Astatine (atomic number 85, symbol At) is a radioactive metal, first produced by Emilio Segre, Kenneth Ross MacKenzie, and Dale Corson in 1940. In nature, it is formed by radioactive decay and exists in small amounts because of its short half-life. This element is, in fact, the rarest one to occur naturally, with estimates that no more than thirty grams are found in the earth's crust. Astatine is adsorbed by metals (silver, gold, platinum) and evaporates easily under normal conditions and in a vacuum. Because of these properties, astatine can be separated (up to 85 percent) from the products of irradiated bismuth by means of vacuum distillation with adsorption of astatine by silver or platinum.
